Kick-Ass 2 Review

Kick-Ass kicked ass!

Kick-Ass 2, the sequel to the 2010 film, is a great fun for all superhero fans out there.  The movie features all kind of characters, and gives us geeks a glimpse of what it’s like exactly if we decide to dress up as superheroes and walk on the streets.  While the result might not be pretty, it’s still pretty bad-ass none of less.  The sequel might not be as strong as the first movie, Kick-Ass 2 is still a great movie for all geeks to geek out about.

Takes place after the events of the first movie, Kick-Ass 2 finds Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) still holding on to his superhero identity, Kick-Ass, and finds a group of like-minded folks named Justice Forever.  The group is essentially the realistic version of Justice League, and they vowel to rid all evils.  On the other hand, Mindy “Hit-Girl” Macready is trying to adjust to a life of normal 15 year-old teenage girl, and giving up her superhero identity once and for all.  Meanwhile, once Red-Mist now Motherfucker Chris D’Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is still plotting to take down Kick-Ass and revenge his father’s death.

The movie works great because of the array of wonderful characters.  All the members of Justice Forever are really awesome, and even though the origin of Remembering Tommy is depressing, you have to admit the result is pretty funny.  Same can be said about Motherfucker’s crew as well.  While most of the characters are just racial stereotypes, Mother Russia, by body builder Olga Kurkulina, turns out to be an one of the kind character.  She shows up, guns blazing, and kicks asses.  She’s also the only character that manages to give Hit-Girl a tough time.  Ever.  $1,500 a week?  Totally worth it.

Jim Carrey’s Colonel Stars and Stripes steals the spotlight while he lasted as well.  The character is full of hope and he serves as the mentor to all the heroes wannabe out there.  He teaches them what’s the meaning of being a superhero.  With his lead, the team manages to fight off some mafia members in one the best fight scenes in the entire movie.  It’s too bad how early he exits the show though,I really hope to see more of him.

Unlike the previous movie, this movie has some really, really dark moment.  This is especially the case when Kick-Ass’ father is killed in the jail cell.  It’s a horrific moment, and it gives the movie a whole different tone.  Also, while there are some great jokes here and there in the movie, there’re also some pretty inappropriate jokes as well.  For example, the scene where Motherfucker tries to rape Night Bitch but couldn’t get himself up is not funny at well.  I fear that there is a line and the movie crosses it.  There’s nothing funny about rape and the movie shouldn’t treat it lightly.

There are also some moments that doesn’t work either.  The whole story where Mindy tries to fit into the life of an average teenage girl is boring and too distracted for me.  It’s like watching Mean Girl, but Lindsay Lohan didn’t end up doing drugs.  However, I do like the ending of that story though when Mindy uses the puking/diarrhea stick and makes all the Plastics really, really upset with their stomachs.  Man, where can I find a stick like that?

I also don’t quite understand Chris D’Amico journey to become the Motherfucker.  The movie features John Leguizamo as Javier, Chris’s bodyguard and last closes friend.  In a scene, Chris’ uncle tries to demonstrate what evil really looks like, and kills Javier when he’s on the phone with Chris.  Upon hearing Javier’s death, Chris thanks his uncle for showing him what evil truly is and leaves.  This is supposed to be the moment where Chris should be a truely evil motherfucker, but it isn’t.  I don’t see much difference in the character, and he never even try to kill his uncle to revenge his friend.  I didn’t read the comic series, but it seems like something in the comic that the writers adopted, but never fully translate it well into the movie.  it would be great though, to see Chris done something to his uncle.  Now that’s a character piece.

Kick-Ass 2 is a great movie.  While there are small moments here and there that slow down the movie a lot, it’s easy to overlook these weaknesses and enjoy the movie regardless.  If you like to see realistic versions of superheros fight, you will definitely want to check out Kick-Ass 2.
