Justice League #23.4: Secret Society Review

Don’t let the title fool you.  It’s not really about the Secret Society.

But it doesn’t mean that this is not a good issue.  Instead of focusing on the Secret Society itself, the issue focuses on The Outside, which turns out to be Earth 3’s Alfred Pennyworth.

This issue features a Gotham City that’s even darker than the one we know already.  No one is good, no one is bad.  It’s a world where everything is sinister, and corruption is celebrated.  Since the world is upside down from what we known already about Batman, it’s a fun concept for the readers.  Joker is still a merciless nutcase, but he’s the good guy this time.

We see this world through Alfred’s eyes and sees how he serves his master.  He’s concern that he’s master has guilt over Earth 3 Dick Grayson (Talon)’s death, and apparently it’s not a good thing to have guilt in the Crime Syndicate.  Anyway, this issue also gives us a closer look at the things to come.  Poor Dick, I hope he made it out of Forever Evil alive.

My biggest problem with the issue has to be the art.  I don’t like it at all, and it can be quite confusing from time to time.  If the art was done differently, the issue would be so much better.
