The right kind of superhero movie.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” takes us back to the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe for the 9th time, and it’s a wonderful experience. The thing is, phase two of MCU has always been lacking directions. The first one is simple, as we are introduced to our heroes for the very first time, and the overall goal is to pit them together. However, that’s not the case for phase two anymore. We already know who these characters are, and it’s time for us to see what’s next for the franchise. “The Winter Soldier” does just that. Not only it brings the character development to the next level, it also allows us to finally see what phase two of MCU is all about.
The movie picks up two years after the event of The Avengers, and Steven Rogers/Captain America continues to work for S.H.I.E.L.D., and try to adapt to the current society. After discovering that S.H.I.E.L.D. might have spies hidden among it, Cap. and Black Widow must work together to find out who’s the traitor in the group, and save the world once again. The movie is part action, part superhero, part political thriller and many more. It hits every notes perfectly, and it’s definitely a superhero movie at its best.
The movie finally maps out the true villains of phase two, and it’s the infamous HYDRA again. It’s revealed that HYDRA has always been active since World War Two, and the organization is hidden secretly within members of S.H.I.E.L.D. This opens up all different kinds of possibilities, and what the future of the franchise is going to be. It’s clear now who the main threats are, and it will have us looking for next year’s Avengers 2 more than ever. Plus, that mid-credit scene is just the perfect addition we need to make the already great movie even better. I’m not going to spoil that one to you at all, but prepared to see something really awesome regarding the Avengers sequel.
All the characters are strong in this movie, and the new comers are great as well. The movie introduces Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, a classic hero from the comic series and Captain America’s longtime side kick. The modern redesign of Falcon is a military personnel that has the ability to operate special mechanic wing pack. The change is for the better, as it gives him the training he needs to match up Captain’s skills, and it also rids the silly abilities he has to speak to birds. A great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and hopefully we will see more of him in later films.
The movie also introduces us a brand new villain- The Winter Soldier. The character is truly terrifying, and he brings actual dangers to our heroes. That mechanic arm of his can actually catch Captain America’s shield, and that’s a legitimately chilling moment. Once his true identity is revealed, it even adds another layer to the already great character. This is really the most successful villain Marvel Cinematic Universe has, other than Loki. It’s clear we will see more of The Winter Soldier in later films, but as friend or foe is everyone’s guess.
The old characters are great as well. This movie features some of the best fight scene we’ve seen yet, and it’s really exciting to see Captain throwing his trusting shield around like no body’s business. This is also the best Black Widow performance we’ve seen yet. She’s not just a badass spy, but a rich character that cares. Captain America and Black widow have some great relationship as well, and it almost like great romantic comedy moments- even though there aren’t really romantic pair-ups. Overall, while we already know these characters from the previously films, but this movie really allows what we learned from before blossoms into truly solid characters.
Nick Fury finally gets some screen time he deserved in this film as well. You can feel his desperation in this film, and his fear when Winter Solider attacks him. This is some highest point of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury performances.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is truly a great superhero movie. The movie mixes humor, action and thrills perfectly together, and it has us looking forward to what in store next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
